BEYOND THE ROCK

Beyond The Rock is Rockhaven’s transitional supportive housing facility. It provides accommodations & further support to the Alumni of Rockhaven’s facility.

Purpose: To provide accommodations in conjunction with a program of rehabilitative services to support men in recovery with a main goal of abstinence. The Landlord Act does not apply to this level of care home.

Objectives: To offer an affordable, cooperative and empowering environment for clients to adjust to independent living.

Validating results came from a Community Needs Survey that was developed and distributed. Results indicated that housing and aftercare are two of the major gaps in the care continuum for men in recovery.

Under the visionary leadership of Dan Saumur, President , the Board Executive seized the opportunity to acquire the adjacent building at 396 Brady St., through the cooperation of the Desjardins Business Centre in January 2008.

Extensive renovations began under the indefatigable determination of Jerry Nolan who collaborated with Shawn Major as the main volunteer.

The business community wholeheartedly supported the venture by donating all new windows and doors, flooring, paint, bathroom renovations, electrical upgrades and laborers.

As a result of the endorsement from the Manitoulin Sudbury Addiction and Mental Health Service Providers planning table, a Transition House Advisory Committee (THAC) was formed and co chaired by Kathryn Irwin-Seguin and Robert Tuttle.

Membership consisted of community partners such as Iris Addiction Recovery for Women, Pinegate Withdrawal Management Services, a concerned addiction specialist from the community along with the Chairs of Rockhaven’s Alumni Committee and Board of Directors.

This committee met from early February until May developing appropriate client and agency protocols. A special note of recognition to Sandra Houzer for her endless support and research work for the committee to function from.

Voting on various house names that were contributed, the winner was announced when Kevin Playford’s submission received the highest number of votes!! “Beyond the Rock” was born with the first client being transferred from Rockhaven on August 1, 2008.

Grand Opening of “Beyond the Rock” on April 22, 2009, was the chance to thank all included in the creation of the home, as well as the agencies that have helped financially.
